Everyone from Texas knows that Tuesday is synonymous with one word: tacos! Whether they’re served fried, soft or open-faced, no true Texan can resist a good Taco Tuesday. And, lucky for us, there’s definitely no shortage of tacos here in the capital city! So if you’re looking for a cheap Tex-Mex fix on a Tuesday to chase away those work-week blues, check out these tasty Taco Tuesday specials around Austin.
Quality Seafood Market – Northeast Austin
An Austin institution since 1938, Quality Seafood Market is a multi-functional fish market that doubles as a delicious seafood restaurant and oyster bar 6 days a week. On the menu is a cornucopia of surf and turf, with oysters for days, loaded Po’Boys, Maryland-Style Crab Cakes, seafood tacos and “You Reel Em” dinners featuring Gulf Shrimp, bacon-wrapped scallops, Ruby Red Trout and more. Most people wouldn’t think that a wholesale seafood market would be well known for their tacos, but Quality Seafood offers amazing weekly specials out of their award-winning restaurant, including half shell happy hours, crab-alicious Maryland Mondays and scrumptious Taco Tuesdays (starting at 6PM), where you can get $3 seafood tacos with shrimp, black drum or catfish and a $2 domestic draft or $1 can of Lone Star, Tecate or PBR to wash it all down!
Austin Taco Project – Downtown Austin
Located inside the super swanky Hilton in the heart of downtown, the Austin Taco Project offers specialty fusion tacos and craft beer with a side of hipster flare. The Austin Taco Project touts itself on being in “the endless pursuit of the world’s perfect taco”, and they are certainly pushing the taco envelop with their bold flavor combos and even bolder names. With a little bit of everything, from Korean and Vietnamese to Mexican and Thai, there’s almost too many tacos to try! On the menu are chef’s specialty creations like the “Oct-Thai-Pus” with shaved Thai octopus and cashew green papaya salad, the “P.E.T.A.” with beer-battered avocado and pickled onion and the “Whataco” with atp grind, sweet onion and specialty sauce. Plus they have a plethora of wines, cocktails, drafts and crafts on tap. But the best day to visit the Austin Taco Project is on Taco Tuesday, which features live music, $2 featured specialty tacos, $4 featured draft beer and $5 draft cocktails and featured wine.
Counter Culture – East Austin
Perched right off the popular Cesar Chavez street in east Austin, Counter Culture is a quaint vegan comfort cafe that focuses on non-processed, organic, locally sourced dishes for all food fans and diet types. This recycle-friendly, fair trade cafe goes local whenever possible and offers totally decent daily specials, salads, sandwiches, dishes and a handful of handmade desserts. They have everything from oil-free to gluten free and everything in between, with no shortage of flavor or perspective. On the menu you’ll find delicious vegan dishes like the Beet Mushroom Walnut Burger, Lentil Loaf, Gluten Free Mac & Cheeze and vegan pizza. But for Counter Culture, Tuesdays are a chance to showcase a new and different taco every week, with unique flavors like falafal, Asian BBQ, curry lentils and Ethiopan beans and squash. So no matter what Tuesday you pick, you’re in for a vegan-tastic taco surprise!
Javelina Bar – Downtown Austin
Located in the historic Rainey Street district, Javelina Bar is a chill hang-out spot for Austinites to grab a beer and a bite with friends and take a break from the hustle of downtown Austin. This charming watering hole features a rustic, wooden interior, great daily specials and a spacious outdoor patio to take in the Austin sunset. Their southern comfort menu includes loads of local beers from Hops & Grain, Austin Beerworks, Thirsty Planet and more, as well as patio-friendly specialty cocktails like the Preacher’s Daughter, Irish Green Tea and Porch Swing. But Javelina Bar isn’t just for drinking: their food menu features plenty of savory snacks and foods to keep you full like burgers, wings, salads and, of course, TACOS. And every Tuesday, Javelina offers the Chef’s Taco of the day for only $2 along with $4 delicious house margaritas to kick off Taco Tuesday right!
Peached Tortilla – Central Austin
Famous for their Banh Mi tacos and retro flare, Peached Tortilla is a funky Austin eatery that features Asian-fusion, a variety of whiskies and great lunch specials, as well as a fun off-location event space called the Peached Social House that hosts popular pop ups and parties. Menu offerings at Peached Tortilla range from Sunday brunch and lunch to dinner and social hour. Their food menu focuses on southern comfort food with an Asian twist, creating something new and different out of our old familiar favorites, with popular items like Crispy Umami Chicken Wings, Pork Belly Buns, Korean Steak Tacos and Thai Shrimp Tostadas. Peached Tortilla also has a great drink menu that includes whiskey drinks, draught, canned and bottled beer, ciders and hand crafted cocktails like Texas Lemonade and Kentucky Mule.
Doc’s Motorworks/Doc’s Backyard – South Austin/Central Austin
Ok, so technically this isn’t a Taco Tuesday, but Doc’s makes the list because of their unique “Taco Wednesday” special, just for all the taco lovers who missed out on Tuesday! With two very different locations in Austin, Doc’s is a super casual neighborhood bar and grill that offers daily drink specials, rotating tap list, loaded cocktails and all the delicious, stick-to-your-ribs bar food you could ever want. Their backyard location in south Austin is definitely much more family-friendly, with a huge outdoor space and adjacent playground for the kiddos, while Doc’s Motorworks has more of a classic dive bar vibe right off 38th street. Doc’s has all the essentials of a good Texas bar: live music, lots of beers and specials to look forward to every day. Some popular dishes include the Stubb’s BBQ Pulled Pork Sandwich, Motorworks Migas and Fish Tacos. But just in case you didn’t get enough tacos on Tacos Tuesday, Doc’s offers its own version of it on Wednesday, with $1 crispy chicken or beef tacos and $2.50 Tecate. That’s right, tacos for just $1 – this is where you should be every Wednesday!
